    Default Bill Canion Status

Went over to Bill's place today to give him one of the new T's. Not there and grandkid who answered the door wasn't much help other than Bill is in the hospital. This evening, Brian (Bill's son) called and gave me an update. Bill has been in the hospital for a couple of weeks (pneumonia was the diagnosis) and it took that long for the medicos to get him back on an even keel. Now the family is looking for a recovery/rehab center for Bill to get him back up to some kind of physical normality. Also, since Bill served in 'Nam', he may qualify for some veterans benefits he has never applied for (agent orange exposure, etc). The family is looking into it.

To make matters more fun, prior to Bill getting pneumonia, Covid hit the family. Fortunately Bill didn't get that nastiness and the family has mostly recovered by now. No one appears to have been severely affected.

So best wishes for as good a recovery as possible to the 'Grumpmeister' .

The rest of you, hopefully stay safe and healthy.

Been a while since I've had any info on Bill. Brian called me tonight and gave me an update. Bill had been put in a rehab center that didn't do anything for him except let him lay and his condition deteriorate. The family has now moved him to a different rehab center that they hope will actually take care of and work with him. He has trouble swallowing so a feeding tube has been surgically implanted into his stomach. He also has poor circulation in his legs and because the previous center didn't take good care of him, he has sores on his ankles that are slow to heal. He is on a more reduced oxygen since he did recover from the pneumonia. He hasn't been immunized for Covid yet but if/when his condition improves, that should be coming.

Visitation is limited to once a day and family only. Once I get my final Covid shot, I hope to become a long lost cousin so I can visit him. I'll have to clear it with family first but Brian said it would be O.K.

So there it is, I told Brian that quite a number of folks had been inquiring about a Bill update. He appreciates the concern that folks have and so do I.

Keeping my fingers crossed. I'd love to see the GOF (Grumpy Old F'er) out at Zars again. He'll never ride again but the conversation would be entertaining.

Bill, Terry and I sure had some good times out there on Wednesdays. Here's hoping things get better for him.

Please pass along my best wishes.

Found out today that Bill died yesterday (9 Apr 2021). Bill was a long standing original member of DBSA. Not a club event or meeting that he didn't attend and actively participate in before the mental and physical frailties finally got the better of him. Bill also served as an Army Lieutenant ground pounding in Vietnam. Hats off to another who served this country.

I will and have missed him. He and I worked many times together at Zars, Hidden Falls, and EDRA (Ozona). Many miles walked and trails cut and trimmed. And many politicians cursed. :-)

Can't say enough about a person that I admired and appreciated. Adios amigo.

Details of services, etc will be posted as they become available.

    RIP Bill.

I've only know Bill since about 2013, but what I know is that he was a good man.

Visitation, funeral, and internment service were nice. Pretty good turnout of folks and that was good to see. Even had a Patriot Guard escort from the funeral home to Fort Sam National Cemetery.

It's been a couple of weeks since the funeral. I went out to the Fort Sam National Cemetery today. If you've never been to one of the National Cemeteries, it's worth your time to do so. Incredible places. Well kept and serene. I have a number of neighbors, acquaintances, and friends interred there. Just felt like it was time to go visit. Bill's site is still without an headstone and no grass has been laid yet. Takes them a while to catch up with the workload. They are doing about 15 services a day.

    I took some photos.
