Like a lot of our major landmarks, the Statue of Liberty must be seen in person and close up to be really appreciated (IMO). The tickets to go all the way to the crown are sold out almost a year in advance so I didn't get to do that.

The base that she sits on is 10 stories high (186 steps to get to the observation deck). Inside is a museum. Back in the late eighties, the statue was refurbished. The original torch was too corroded to use, so they removed it and built a new torch. Original torch.

View of lower Manhatten from the observation deck.

View of the tourist ferries from the observation deck.

A lot of revolutionary war history to be found in New York. I didn't realize that it was the last major city to be freed from the British. And now for a bit of history. This was a very cool little tavern and the upper three floors are a museum. Unfortunately no pictures were allowed to be taken inside but I learned quite a bit of history while there.

And for more recent history, Trinity Church not far from the World Trade Center site.

A tribute to the fire fighters on a building near the WTC site.

The tallest of the two new WTC buildings going up.

The WTC memorials will occupy the footprints of the original buildings. Reflecting pools surrounded by trees.

Inside of the building across from the WTC site. You know somebody has money to spend lavishly.

Next bucket list item crossed off, Empire State Building.

View looking Manhatten north from observation deck. Notice Central Park.

View looking Manhatten south from observation deck. The new WTC building is already a bit taller than the 3 buildings next to it.

Common sight. New Yorkers get their greenery one way or another.

Central Park is a nice green space within the city.

The Museum of Natural History next to Central Park. On my list of places to visit because of the dinosaur exhibits.

Times Square during the day. The globe they drop for New Years is still there with the '2011' lit up underneath it.

Times Square at night. So many lights that the flash on my camera didn't go off.

After New York, headed to WVa. Stayed overnight in Hancock, Md. The old Chesapeake-Ohio Canal runs thru there.

It was nice to be back in WVa for a while. I don't have much in common with those folks anymore but I do love the cooler weather, mountain scenery, and twisty roads.

Last of the photos. Covered bridges used to be very common in the U.S. but most have been replaced over the years. Thankfully some have survived. This one, located in Philippi, WVa is the biggest that I know about.

That's it for the pics. Hope you enjoyed them.
